Injury Time

After reading through the 2015-26 Rules Book recently, I was reminded of a couple situations associated with the Injury Time rule.

  1. Injury time can be awarded in multiple situations.
    • not showing up to the scorer’s table, ready to wrestle. This must be corrected during the 1.5 minute injury time,+
    • an injury during the match, not incurred by the opponent and
    • the result of a legal move created by the opponent that accidentally creates an injury.
  2. After the second injury time, and within the allotted 1.5 injury time, the opponent shall have the choice of top, bottom or neutral position on the restart. I think this restart is sometimes missed by both officials and coaches while trying to maintain the speed of the match.
  3. If a wrestler is injured during an illegal move, the wrestler must take Recovery Time. An injured contestant cannot take injury time immediately following recovery time.

Note from NFHS Wrestling Rules: Taking an injury time-out for a non-injury situation is unethical. Coaches should continue to remind their wrestlers of the Code of Ethics found in the Appendix of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Book.

Remember there are several exceptions associated with Injury Time and listed in the Rules Book under Rule 8, Section 2.

Injury Time 1.5 Minutes
Recovery Time 2 Minutes
Blood Time 5 Minutes

Warning: Watch this video at your own risk. A good example of an accidental injury.
